How much feed does a pig eat every day? How much is used to grow meat and how much is used to maintain life?
How much feed does a pig need daily to be considered healthy?
A pig’s appetite depends on its weight, breed, and feed quality, and can be roughly divided into three stages:
1. Piglet Stage (5-20 kg): Eats 1.5-2.5 kg daily. Consumes approximately 1.1 catties of feed to gain one kg of meat (low feed-to-meat ratio, resulting in rapid growth).
2. Middle Stage (20-50 kg): Eats 2.5-3.5 kg daily. Consumes approximately 1.1 kg of feed to gain 0.5 kg of meat.
3. Pigs in the growing stage (50-115 kg) should eat 3.5-4.5 kg of feed per day.
Pigs need to consume at least 1.4 kg of feed to grow 0.5 kg of meat (growth slows in later stages).
Acceptable standard: Modern pigs are considered good if their average feed-to-meat ratio from 125 kg to 125 kg is ≤ 2.5:1, meaning they gain 0.5 kg of meat per 1.25 kg of feed. Exceeding this ratio may result in excessive feed waste or slow growth.
Where does the feed go?
Pigs use the feed they eat for two main purposes:
Maintaining life (about 40%): Even if a pig is lying still, it still consumes energy to maintain breathing, heartbeat, and body temperature. For example, a 50 kg pig consumes about 0.5 kg of feed per day just to “keep alive.” If the pig doesn’t gain weight, the larger it gets, the more it consumes to maintain its life (for a pig weighing over 100 kg, perhaps 60% of its feed is used for maintenance).
Meat Growth (approximately 60%) The remaining feed is used for actual meat growth, including lean meat and fat growth.
Lean Meat Growth: Highly efficient, with 1.75 kg of feed producing 0.5 kg of lean meat.
Fat Growth: Low efficiency, with 3.5 kg of feed producing 0.5 kg of fat.
For example:
An 80kg pig eats 3kg of feed per day. 1.25kg is used to maintain life (breathing, body temperature, etc.). 1.75kg is used for growth, resulting in a weight gain of approximately 0.7kg.
How can we get pigs to eat less “life-saving food” and grow more meat?
Feeding and Management:
* Ensure pigs are well fed and have adequate water (to promote lean meat growth)
* Design feed troughs appropriately (two round feed troughs for every 10 pigs)
Environmental Control:
* Maintain a pig house temperature of 18-23°C (constant temperature is optimal)
* Ensure good ventilation, ample space, and appropriate humidity (to avoid temperature stress and feed waste)
